Broad, strap-like, finely spine-edged, olive-green leaves with waxy-gray undersides form a wide rosette. With age, leaves become grayish. Purplish-blue flowers appear in late summer and early autumn, followed by long-lasting, bright scarlet berries. The form ‘Discolor’ has leaves with purple undersides and white, powdery scales.

Height: 10–15in (25–38cm)

Spread: 12–15in (30–38cm)

Winter: 55–59°F (13–15°C). Indirect light

Summer: 59–75°F (15–24°C). Indirect light or light shade

Care: In winter, keep compost just moist and the urn full of water; in summer, water freely, keeping the urn full of water. Feed every 4 weeks from late spring to late summer with weak fertilizer applied to the compost and in the urn.

Propagation: Once a plant has flowered, the rosette slowly dies and growth is taken over by offsets growing around it. Cut off the main plant at compost level. Once offsets are 1⁄3–½ the size of a full-grown parent plant, sever one close to its base with a sharp knife. Allow the cut surface to dry for 1–2 days then pot it into a clean pot with well-drained compost, using a thin stake for support if necessary. Place in 64–70°F (18–21°C).
