Common Pineapple, Edible Pineapple: Ananas comosus

Common Pineapple, Edible Pineapple: Ananas comosus
Common Pineapple, Edible Pineapple: Ananas comosus

Earlier known as Ananas sativus, this member of the Pineapple family grows 4ft (1.2m) or more high, but is usually half this height when indoors. It forms a rosette of arching, pointed, strap-like, gray-green leaves that become tinged red if in strong sunlight. The short flower stem produces blue-petaled flowers with small pink bracts. Fruits appear about 6 months after the flowers, though seldom on plants indoors. Ananas comosus var. variegatus (Variegated Pineapple), which is pictured below, is smaller, with leaves variegated green, white, yellow, and pink.

Height: 1 ½–2 ½ft (45–75cm)

Spread: 2–2 ½ft (60–75cm)

Winter: 55–75°F (13–24°C). Full sun

Summer: 59–75°F (15–24°C). Direct light without full sun

Care: In winter, keep compost just moist and increase watering frequency as the plant becomes more active, allowing compost to dry out slightly between each application. Throughout summer, feed every 4 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot plants in spring, usually every other year.

Propagation: During spring, sever offsets from around the base, allow cut ends to dry for a day, then transfer to compost in a pot. Place in 70°F (21°C).
