There are two types of Hydrangea macrophylla: the Mop-head type (sometimes known as Hortensia, with large, round flower heads 6–8in [15–20cm] wide) and the Lacecaps (flat, more open heads, 4–6in [10–15cm] wide). The Mop-head type is grown as a houseplant, in colors including white, blue, pink, and red. They are ideal for introducing color to cool rooms during late spring and early summer. Most are bought when just beginning to show color. Outdoors, they flower from midsummer to autumn.
