Common Hyacinth, Dutch Hyacinth: Hyacinthus orientalis
This popular bulbous plant flowers during winter until early spring. The candle-like heads are packed with scented, wax-like flowers in a wide color range—white, yellow, pink, red, mauve, and blue.
Height: 6–9in (15–23cm) |
Spread: 3–5in (7.5–13cm) |
Winter: When shoot tips appear above the compost’s surface, place in 50°F (10°C); gradually increase to 64°F (18°C) when the flower buds show color. Direct light without full sun |
Summer: Not applicable |
Care: Usually, pots or bowls of hyacinths are bought when buds are just starting to show color. Keep compost evenly moist, increasing the amount of water as foliage and flowers develop. No feeding or repotting is necessary. |
|
Propagation: After flowers fade, place the pot and plants in 41–45°F (5–7°C) in a vermin-proof shed. Later, plant into a garden. |
