Bunny Ears, Goldplush Plant, Prickly Pear, Rabbit’s Ears, Yellow Bunny Ears: Opuntia microdasys
Much-branched desert cactus with bright-green, pad-like leaves that are really flattened stems. These pads do not have spines, but are covered with attractive tufts of yellow, barbed bristles. Plants in the wild develop yellow flowers, but those indoors seldom bloom. There are several superb forms with reddish or white clusters of bristles.
Height: 10–12in (25–30cm) when grown in a pot, but up to 3ft (90cm) in a conservatory or greenhouse |
Spread: 6–8in (15–20cm) when grown in a pot, but 12–15in (30–38cm) in a conservatory or greenhouse |
Winter: 45–55°F (7–13°C); do not allow temperature to fall below the lowest figure. Full sun |
Summer: 55–80°F (13–27°C). Full sun |
Care: In winter, keep compost slightly moist; in summer, water freely and feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. |

Propagation: During midsummer, remove young pads, allow cut ends to dry, insert in sandy compost, and place in 55–64°F (13–18°C). |
