Air Plant, Pot-Bellied Tillandsia: Tillandsia circinnata
This epiphytic tillandsia gains one of its common names from the egg-like swelling (a pseudobulb) at its base. Gray leaf blades, up to 8in (20cm) long, are usually twisted, curled, or in spirals. The plant bears blue flowers with pink bracts.
Height: 8–18in (20–45cm) |
Spread: 6–10in (15–25cm) |
Winter: 50–59°F (10–15°C). Indirect light |
Summer: 61–80°F (16–27°C). Indirect light or slight shade |
Care: These grow without the benefit of compost; plants are attached to pieces of wood, cork, or a large shell. Instead of being watered, they need to be misted regularly with clean, lime-free water. Every 3–4 weeks throughout summer, add weak liquid fertilizer to the misting water. No repotting is needed. After a rosette has flowered, it starts to die and eventually is replaced by offshoots from around its base. |
|
Propagation: Divide large and congested plants in spring and place in 64–70°F (18–21°C). |
