Sword Fern: Nephrolepis exaltata
Ideal and resilient fern for indoors, with long, tapering, usually erect fronds and several attractive forms (see sidebar).

Care: In winter, keep compost slightly moist; in summer, water freely and feed every 2–3 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. Repot in spring when roots fill the pot, usually every 2–3 years. When already in a large pot, tease away some of the compost and repot into a same-sized pot, adding some fresh compost. |

Propagation: Divide congested plants in spring and place in 55–59°F (13–15°C). |

- Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Bostoniensis’ (Boston Fern): graceful fern, with arching fronds (wider than the species).
- Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Rooseveltii’: distinctive and attractive, with large, wavy-edged leaflets.
- Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Smithii’: delicate and finely divided, lace-like fronds. Has a weeping nature.
- Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Whitmanii’ (Lace Fern): frilled, deeply cut fronds with a feather-like nature.
