Apple Cactus, Column Cactus, Peruvian Apple, Peruvian Apple Cactus: Cereus peruvianus (Cereus uruguayanus)
This columnar cactus has a bluish-green, ribbed column and stout, brown spines. Eventually, it produces large, scented, white, funnel-shaped flowers, 2–3in (5–7.5cm) wide. Cereus peruvianus monstrosus, sometimes listed as Cereus ‘Monstrosus’ (pictured), is an unusual form that is much smaller than the species and has attractively distorted, branched stems with irregular ribs.

Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist; in summer, water freely. From late spring to late summer, feed every 2 weeks with weak liquid fertilizer. |

Propagation: When plants become too large, cut off the top, allow the cut surface to dry slightly, and insert in sandy compost, preferably in spring or summer, and place in 59–64°F (15–18°C). The lower part is usually discarded. |
