Blushing Philodendron, Red-Leaf Philodendron: Philodendron erubescens
Vigorous evergreen climber with arrow-shaped leaves up to 12in (30cm) long and 7in (18cm) wide on mature plants, borne on long purple leafstalks. When young, leaves are rose-pink, slowly becoming dark, glossy green with a coppery tinge. There are several forms, including ‘Red Emerald’ (compact, with arrow-shaped leaves, pale bronze when young, becoming dark olive-green with narrow, purplish edges) and ‘Burgundy’ (young foliage is coppery-red, gradually becoming olive-green with burgundy undersides).

Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist; in summer, water freely but ensure good drainage, and feed every 3–4 weeks. Repot young plants annually in spring, and thereafter about every 2 years. When large, top-dress the compost. Provide a moss-covered pole for support. |
