King Begonia, Painted-Leaf Begonia, Rex Begonia: Begonia rex
This rhizomatous-rooted perennial has large, slightly heart-shaped, lopsided, wrinkle-surfaced, dark-green leaves with silvery zones near their edges. It is rarely grown: it is mainly the related plants, known as Rex Hybrids, that are seen. The hybrid forms have colorful leaves, up to 10in (25cm) long, that create dominant displays. Many named forms exist.

Care: In winter, keep compost barely moist, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings; in summer, water freely without continually saturating the compost, and feed every 2–3 weeks. Repot in spring when roots fill the pot, usually every year when young. |

Propagation: Divide congested plants in spring, when being repotted, or take leaf cuttings in late spring or early summer. Cut leaves into squares or triangles and place in 55–61°F (13–16°C). |
