SILVER SQUILL
BOTANICAL NAME
- Ledebouria socialis (syn.Scilla violacea)
This small, bulbous plant has beautiful strappy leaves mottled with splotches of dark green.The underside of the leaf is a burgundy color. The bulb is usually sitting on top of the medium, adding to the uniqueness of this plant.
LIGHT PREFERENCE
Give the silver squill a bright light, such as a south or west window. If the light isn’t bright enough, the leaves will stretch toward it.
WATERING
Water thoroughly and let the soil dry out partially before watering again. Because the bulbs above the medium store moisture, they can take a bit of dryness. Yet, if it is allowed to dry too much, the plant will lose leaves.
FLOWER
The tiny flowers are on stems that rise above the foliage an inch or two. Each flower is pink, green, and white, and quite beautiful; unfortunately, they are very small. When they bloom, find a magnifying glass, and look at them closely.
SIZE
This plant stays under 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall.
PROPAGATION
The plant multiplies rapidly and is easily pulled apart.They look better with a few pieces in one pot, instead of individually potted.
