Baby’s Tears, Dot Plant, Flamingo Plant, Freckle Face, Measles Plant, Pink Dot, Pink Polka, Polka Dot Plant: Hypoestes phyllostachya

Earlier known as Hypoestes sanguinolenta, this bushy, sprawling, evergreen perennial produces a mass of oval, olive-green, spear-tipped leaves covered with white to pinkish spots and blotches. Superb cultivars include ‘Bettina’ (lighter-colored markings), ‘Carmina’ (bright red leaves), ‘Purpuriana’ (plum-colored markings), and ‘Wit’ (leaves marbled white).

Care: In winter, keep compost lightly moist; in summer, water more freely and feed every 2–3 weeks. Repot in spring when roots fill the pot, usually every year when young. |

Propagation: Take 3in (7.5cm) stem-tip cuttings in late spring and early summer. Place in 70°F (21°C). |
