NEOREGELIA CAROLINAE
A member of the bromeliad family, which includes the pineapple, neoregelias are some of the most colorful and easy houseplants. Do not give these plants a fertilizer containing a large amount of nitrogen, as it will turn the colorful leaves green.These plants are usually sold in a container with potting medium,
but they are quite often epiphytes in their native habitat.
LIGHT PREFERENCE
A medium to bright light, such as an east or west window, will keep the neoregelia colorful and growing.
WATERING
The shape of this plant makes a natural urn or vase in the center of the plant, and this needs to be kept filled with fresh water. When adding water, fill the urn to overflowing so that some spills into the potting medium.The potting mix does not need more water than that, as the roots merely anchor the plant. Empty the vase completely and refill often.
FLOWER
The flowers bloom down in the vase and are pretty, but not obvious. The plant is grown for its beautiful foliage.
SIZE
Neoregelias range from a few inches high to a few feet high and wide, depending on the cultivar.
PROPAGATION
Once these plants flower, the parent plant will gradually die. Before it dies, small plantlets, called offsets or sometimes “pups,” come up at the base of the parent.When these have reached one-third to one-half the size of the parent, they can be potted up individually.
CULTIVARS
- Neoregelia ‘FIREBALL’ – This smaller plant can form a very large clump of fiery red leaves. If the offsets are not removed and are allowed to stay attached to each other, the result is a large clump that is quite striking.
- Neoregelia ‘COTTON CANDY’ – The hot pink center of this plant brings to mind spun cotton candy.
- Neoregelia ‘DEVROE’ – As if the variegated leaves weren’t enough, the fireball red center makes it a showstopper.
- Neoregelia ‘FRANCA’ – Yellow edges on a green leaf with a hot pink center make for a beautiful plant.
- Neoregelia ‘INFERNO’ – This almost-white plant has green stripes with just a touch of red in the center.
